Who are we?

The Alternative Post-Punk A Cappella Choir is based in Melbourne, Australia and is all about having a fun, challenging and rewarding experience. It was founded in 2013 by Melbourne vocalist and a cappella fanatic, Heidi McDermott.

We rehearse in Preston in Melbourne’s northside on Wednesday nights. Rehearsals run in blocks of 10 weeks (or thereabouts). All members sign up for each block. There is no option for casual attendance. Sorry!

Our repertoire caters to all fabulous soprano, alto, tenor and bass singers.

If you’re keen to sing gospel, folk or world music, this is probably not the choir for you. Think Divinyls, Madonna, Elvis Costello, Blondie, The Cure, Talking Heads, Clairy Brown & the Bangin’ Rackettes, Tears For Fears, with a bit of funk, soul and tasty jazz thrown in.

The song arrangements we do are fun and engaging and will stretch you musically, be just plain fun to sing, or both. You can listen to sample recordings of some of our songs below.

Boys In Town by The Divinyls

Love Letter by Clairy Browne & The Bangin’ Rackettes

Call Me by Blondie

Yep. That’s right. But all interested newcomers are required to participate in a rehearsal before deciding to commit to a whole term. By doing this, you will get a feel for the repertoire, style of teaching, how laid-back or strict it is, the level of ability required, the people involved, the vibe, and more. Then, if you like us, you can join.

The choir is best suited to those with previous choir experience, or those who are experienced vocalists. Great for singers who pick up parts quickly and can learn on their own between rehearsals, or for those who are ready to challenge themselves. If you are looking for your first choir experience, don’t be discouraged. Come along to a rehearsal, try us on for size and see how it feels. You will be warmly welcomed.

We rehearse 7-9pm Wednesday nights during school term. You’ll find a list of term dates here.
The cost per term block is $120 / $60 concession (for full time students and health care card holders). The fees are subject to change. All members must pay the term fee upfront prior to the first rehearsal.
